Running a 1:1 can be quite tricky, especially if you’re new to the whole management game.

In order to help ourselves (and let’s admit it mostly our founders) our instructional designer Joshua has developed this framework that helps you to dive deep in your 1:1s but also keep a good handle on time.

It allows you to throw away awkward small talk, and cut to the chase — so you can focus on what’s most important: having solid relationships at work.

Let’s dive in.

1. It starts with quantifying (10 mins)

Like all good things in life, everything is made up of data. Step 1 is to ask your team member how they’re feeling in that moment, using this nifty little scale. Btw we use Miro for documentation, we’ve prepared a template for you here.

For best results, prepare two sticky notes: 1 for you, 1 for your direct report. Take a few minutes to plot yourselves on the scale:
